WATER RATES FOR THOSE ON TALA WATER

WATER RATES FOR THOSE ON TALA WATER

TALA WATER RATES

Please note that following the reduction in the subsidy from the Water Board to cover the cost of electricity to pump water, Tala Council had no option but to increase the water rates slightly and these were included in the bills issued for the third period of 2017 to those on Tala water.

First 20 tonnes                           €0.92 per tonne
21-50  tonnes                             €1.07 per tonne
51 to 70 tonnes                          €1.77 per tonne
71 tonnes and over                    €2.07 per tonne

The standing charge of  €7 remains unaltered.

In addition to the increases shown above, please note that as a result of an EU Directive, a 5% levy for 'environment cost' [based on consumption] plus VAT has been included on the bills.  Until the necessary programming work has been completed, please note that this tax is only mentioned in Greek [Περιβαλλοντικο τελος εντος κυβερνητικων υδατικων εργων: 0.05* [consumption] = [amount]].  This is shown in the box Consumption Breakdown underneath the Total.   Once the necessary programming work has been completed the Environment Tax will be mentioned in this box, and then under Transactions of Accounts [the box below] there will be shown Total, Environment tax amount, and VAT [all in Greek and English] plus the final amount payable.

BIO SYSTEMS - THE WATER POLLUTION CONTROL LAW

BIO SYSTEMS - THE WATER POLLUTION CONTROL LAW

Please note that Cyprus Law now requires those who operate a bio system to have a licence.  An operator is classed as 'the natural or legal person who operates or controls the installation, or which has been given decisive power in respect of its technical operation'.

Some maintenance contractors are contacting complexes with a bio system to inform them that the management committee of that complex must by law obtain a licence and that this will cost the complex in the region of €1500.   This licence is renewable every four years.

The requirement for the licence appears to fall on those who either instal and/or maintain bio systems and/or who arrange for removal of the effluent on a regular basis so that the authorities can ensure that the bio system is not causing pollution and that the effluent is being disposed of correctly.

If copies of the law [translated into English] are required by complexes or individuals with a bio system, please contact me on toffee@primehome.com and I will email the information I have.

The notes above and translated text available are intended for guidance purposes only.  Please obtain legal opinion from a lawyer as to how the law affects you and/or your property.

POLICE TO LAUNCH SEAT BELT CAMPAIGN FROM MONDAY 22 JANUARY

POLICE TO LAUNCH SEAT BELT CAMPAIGN FROM MONDAY 22 JANUARY

From Cyprus Mail 21 January 2018

The use of seatbelts, in the front and the back will be the focus of the police force’s first road safety campaign of the year, which will start on Monday and run until January 28.

According to a police statement, the campaign is part of efforts to reduce the number of fatal traffic accidents on the island.

For the duration of the campaign special attention will be given to the use of seat belts in the back seats as their use in the back is much lower than in front seats, the police said. Checks will also be made to ensure small children are in baby seats.

ZELEMENOS CAT - DO YOU RECOGNISE IT PLEASE?

ZELEMENOS CAT - DO YOU RECOGNISE IT PLEASE?

Does anyone in the Zelemenos area of Kamares recognise this puss please?

It is currently availing itself of food on an occasional basis but otherwise seems well fed.  However, the person who has been feeding it is about to go away and so they are concerned for its welfare, especially as colder weather is likely soon.

The cat is very tame and keen to get into the house!

If the cat is recognised, could you please phone 95121390.   The 'feeder' is concerned to ensure that the cat is going to be alright whilst they are away.

NEW MACHINES FOR PAPHOS RENAL UNIT BUT MORE NEEDED

NEW MACHINES FOR PAPHOS RENAL UNIT BUT MORE NEEDED

From Cyprus Mail 14 January 2018 - article by Bejay Browne

THE first four of 20 new dialysis machines promised by the government are finally operational at Paphos’ renal unit.

The machines went into use at the unit over the Christmas period, according to Graham Brown, the chairman of the Paphos Kidney Association. He told the Sunday Mail that although improvements at the unit are ongoing, much more needs to be done.
“I believe the rest of the machines will be added as and when the current ones, which are very old, break beyond repair. This is a positive move but we need a larger space and more staff,” he said.
Fifteen machines are presently working and are in constant use, catering for the 14 beds at the unit at Paphos general hospital. A further one is situated in the intensive care unit.
Dialysis patients are of all ages and two machines have been specially adapted to cater for children.
According to Dr Lakis Yioukkas, who runs the renal unit, there are currently 75 patients receiving regular dialysis with a further 12 waiting for treatment.
“Every year, the number of patients we see increases by 20 per cent, and last year alone we had fifteen new patients,” he said.
As number of those needing lifesaving dialysis treatment soars, Dr Yioukkas urged people to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications, as they can cause chronic kidney damage.
“Painkillers and such like are the main reasons behind kidney damage we are seeing, and they are dangerous medications. People should take them with caution and always with medical advice.”
He also advised people to exercise more and eat healthily, which will help to control blood pressure, cholesterol levels and diabetes.
He also stressed the urgent need for a new renal unit along with more doctors – there are currently only two – and more nurses.
“The main problem we are facing is that the haemodialysis unit is too small and also that we have no in-patient kidney clinic at the hospital.”
The doctor said that patients admitted to the hospital currently have to be placed ‘wherever there is a spare bed’ and that they could end up on any of the wards.
“We urgently need a six bed ward dedicated to kidney patients where they can stay, the current situation is not satisfactory at all,” he said.
Brown fully understands the problems facing patients as he has hereditary polycystic kidney disease and receives regular dialysis treatment at the unit to keep him alive. Each of the hemodiafiltration (HDF) units which the charity has recently donated and which the government will now supply, comes with a €25,000 price tag. If a patient doesn’t receive dialysis when needed, they will die within five days.
Brown’s treatments take around four to five hours and he needs them three times a week to keep him alive. It costs around €50,000 to treat each patient a year.
Nurses are currently working many double shifts, he said, four days and nights of the week, due to understaffing and a number on sick leave.
“We have also raised money for a new special machine for those with low blood pressure and this will need three specially trained nurses to operate. Intensive care is examining training them up to be able to use the machine correctly but we can’t do anything to help to pay for this, as specialist training is the responsibility of the government,” he said.
Brown noted that while regular dialysis treatments takes around five hours, patients with low blood pressure can’t use the machines. They need a far gentler treatment, which takes far longer and currently have to travel to Nicosia to use the only machine on the island.
“We have got the money for the machine, well over 30,000 euros.”
Supporters of the association worked tirelessly in 2017 and raised over 73,000 euros for the renal unit. All sorts of events such a regular quizzes, raffles and generous donations have helped, said Brown. And in 2018, a classical music festival celebrating the music of Bach, in support of the association, organised by Andrew Oliver, is expected to boost the charities income considerably.
The renal unit is reliant on the fundraising of the association and Brown also advises concerned holidaymakers as to the local diet and facilities.
“I often get phone calls from all over the world asking advice about dialysis treatment available and I have also developed a diet sheet specifically for people who are unsure about Cyprus and the food here.”
Brown said that although the government has agreed to build a new renal unit at the hospital and initial steps towards this are underway, he has no idea of its size or how long it will take to build.
The association is constantly trying to upgrade the standards of the ward and ensure that the nurses have what they need to make their working lives better.
Brown said the charity also aims to re-equip the new ward when it’s ready, and recently bought new pillows and pillow cases after nurses were forced to ask patients to bring in their own pillows.
“I am just thankful that I am not one of the people waiting for dialysis,” he said.

LOGICOM CYPRUS MARATHON - Update from Andrew Lauder, Chairman of the St Michael's Hospice Charity

LOGICOM CYPRUS MARATHON - Update from Andrew Lauder, Chairman of the St Michael's Hospice Charity

The entry list is now closed and registered.  At 200 walkers we were the second largest team ever to appear at the Logicom Cyprus Marathon and we now have a MASSIVE 255 walkers/runners, 2 dogs and a baby, all dressed in running shirts lovingly ( and patiently!) designed by Charlotte Hadjikyriacous and produced by the incredibly helpful race organisers on our behalf with all our generous sponsors' names on each of them! That should be a good photo opportunity!

We also have 15 West Coast Runners walking for our Charity and 20 children from Twycross House School who are running 10k on the same day in  the UK.

A total of 290 people supporting the St. Michael's Hospice Charity. I can't tell you how humbly grateful I am to all of you for your support - you have all done something amazing by putting your names down.
I attach an advance copy of the programme for you and hope that, if you have the time, you will be able to stay for the presentations at about 10.00 a.m. as we are being presented with a special prize for having the second largest team. It would be great if you could be there, as without you, it would not have happened. I shall stay on to be there when our four courageous 10k runners and three half marathon runners come in as well as the West Coast long distance Runners and who knows, some of you who are going for glory in the 5k Fun Run may win it!

Either way, it will be quite an experience to be such a big part of the 2.500 competitors, 800 of whom will be in the 5k Fun Run.

Finally, may I please ask you to try as hard as you can to raise more sponsorship above the €30. There will be a lot of competition for sponsorship with 2,500 runners, so please get them tied up early. If all of you can raise an extra €10 above the €30 entry fee, that would bring an extra €2,500 to the Hospice, €20 would bring in  €5,000, which would be such a help towards the €250,000 running costs.
YOU CAN DO IT!

You can also pop into any St Michael's Hospice Charity shop to make a donation.

Thanks again and remember we only have 49 days until the BIG DAY!

Andrew Lauder
Chairman of the St Michael's Hospice

PAPHOS FOLK & COUNTRY CLUB

PAPHOS FOLK & COUNTRY CLUB

PAPHOS FOLK (& COUNTRY) CLUB

What:  Paphos Folk Club is an informal gathering of those who prefer their music less strident.  In deference to those with less acute hearing, a public address system is provided and instruments can be amplified, however.
When:  We meet on the first Thursday of every month, from 8 p.m. till about 11.
Where:  We meet at the Phoenix Social Club, Kato Paphos.  Food, frequently curry, is available.
Why:  Whilst there is no shortage of rock and local music in Paphos, there is no other outlet, that we are aware of, for anglophone folk and country music, other than this club.  The club was founded some years ago and met in premises in Chlorakas.  When the original convenor moved away, its running was taken over by Phil Willcock and Paul Lowndes and moved to the Phoenix.  Phil and Paul are founder-members of Abzorba, a Paphos-based folk band that has been going since 2004, and have recently formed a country offshoot, Bandanna.
How:  Intending performers are requested to contact Phil Willcock beforehand so that a schedule of acts can be drawn up.  Each performer is allotted 2 - 3 songs/tunes at a time.  When all have had a turn, we go down the list again.  Acts are confined to live music - backing tapes, recitations and drum machines are not acceptable.  More emphasis is placed on entertainment value than is common at more traditional folk clubs.  Performers are encouraged to avoid the dirge-like, wrist-slashing type of song that can sometimes be heard at the latter.  At the same time, the intention is to give an opportunity to all, irrespective of ability, to perform.
Who:  The meetings are open to all.  Entrance is free to Phoenix members.  Non-members need to sign in (to satisfy police requirements) and to pay the Phoenix €2, which gives temporary membership for a week.

COASTAL WALKWAY PLANNED FOR KISSONERGA

COASTAL WALKWAY PLANNED FOR KISSONERGA

From Cyprus Mail 28 December 2017

In its last meeting the Kissonerga council decided to go ahead with a coastal walkway along its beach area in 2018.
The walkway will be 2km long, starting from the Potima beach and stretching to Mouttes.
President of the Kissonerga council Giorgos Stylianou told the Cyprus News Agency that the land in some places will have to be compacted while benches, rubbish bins and view points will be installed with the view of both tourists and locals visiting the area.

The walkway will also link four hotels in the area.
Stylianou said the creation of the walkway is a temporary measure until budgets are approved for a grander planned project that will include lighting, a cycle path and other features.

He said that Kissonerga has one of the most beautiful coast lines in Cyprus.
