Famagusta T.A. - phone 23-803040 investigates

 

The photo of a person sought, suspected of cases of building break-ins and car theft, recently 

committed, in Famagusta province, is released by the Police, in order to collect information that

may help identify the evidence and locate it.

 

One burglary and one attempted burglary were committed on September 21, 2020, at a car 

sales facility and a credit institution in Paralimny. A car key was stolen from the car shop, while no

property was stolen from the credit institution, as the offender failed to break in and enter the 

premises.

 

The carjacking was also committed on 21 September, while the vehicle was parked in an area in 

Paralimni. The stolen car was found abandoned in the Morfu area at around 11.00pm on 

September 21.

 

Examinations carried out by the Famagusta T.E.O. revealed evidence against the young man 

depicted, who is also being sought.

TWO SOUGHT BY POLICE SUSPECTED OF STEALING BAG AND MONEY

Two people suspected of stealing a bag containing the sum of 2,350 euros are being sought by police.

 

The theft was committed on the evening of August 22, 2020, in a beer garden in the Ayia Napa area.

 

Photos of the two suspects are released to gather information that may help identify and locate them.

POLICE LOOKING FOR PALESTINIAN FOR HOME BURGLARIES

Police are looking for Abudahroul Ramsi H.S., aged 44, from Palestine, in connection with the burglary of two homes, possession of break-in tools and cause of malicious damage.

Police also said on Wednesday that the suspect (photos) is of average build with short dark hair and brown eyes.

ARREST OF TWO PERSONS IN CONNECTION WITH INVESTIGATIONS INTO BURGLARIES AND THEFTS

A total of six cases of burglaries and thefts are being investigated by the Police in Paphos province against two persons who were arrested and detained to facilitate interrogations.

 

These are cases of office break-ins, two supermarkets, a bakery, a kiosk and a restaurant, committed last night, in the areas of Kisonerga and Lebas, in Paphos.

 

A car was stolen from the office. The car was then spotted and picked up by members of the police.

 

A laptop computer, cash register and soft drinks were stolen from the restaurant, a number of cigarette and tobacco packets were stolen from the two supermarkets and the cash register drawer of one supermarket containing coins and two plastic coin boxes were stolen from the bakery. Nothing was stolen from the stand after the alleged assailants fled the scene when the alarm system sounded.

 

During the examinations by members of the Peyia Police Station, testimony was obtained against a 35-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman for committing the six burglaries and thefts. They were arrested and detained for examination purposes.

WANTED ON A CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT A FELONY AND ROBBERY

Police are seeking Hassan Ozcan,18 (photo 1) and Mehmet Hassan, 30 (photo 2), residents of 

Limassol, against whom testimony has emerged in connection with an investigation into the 

offences of conspiracy to commit a felony and robbery, committed on 05/08/2020 in Limassol.

WANTED FOR ASSAULT AND WOUNDING OF AN 80 YEAR OLD MAN

Police are searching for the person pictured to facilitate investigations into an investigation into an 80-year-old man's injury case committed on August 3, 2020, in Paphos. 

Specifically, on the above date the 80-year-old spotted the above person trying to break into his moped with

a screwdriver who, after beating him in the arm with the screwdriver he was holding, fled.

SECURITY TIPS FOR THE FESTIVE PERIOD

Security at Christmas.

1. Deterring would-be criminals is one of the most effective forms of crime prevention.

Invest in a motion sensor flood-light or even some outdoor Christmas lights to highlight your home’s exterior. This will hopefully make approaching your home too conspicuous for a burglar. Highlighting the fact your possessions are security marked and registered on Immobilise using window decals provides a further warning that your goods are marked, traceable and not worth the risk of stealing!

2. Festive lighting – be secure.

A common mistake of many festive decorators is to feed extension cables through partially open windows.  Criminals know to look for this vulnerability. When it comes to outdoor lighting, opt for solar or battery operated lights or install outdoor electrical outlets.

3. Dispose of gift packaging carefully. 

Refuse collections over the Christmas / New Year period are normally at different times. If you can’t take packaging to a recycling point, make sure you only put your rubbish out just before the collection and do your best to fold boxes so that they do not advertise your new contents of your home to thieves!   Also arrange for a friend or neighbour to remove any mail or flyers from your postbox so that your absence is not advertised.

4. Protect your Identity.

It is good practice never to dispose of receipts and personal paperwork without first shredding it. Christmas is a time when this is especially important! Be careful though not to shred any important warranty details.  Make sure documents you keep are stored somewhere secure.

5. Check doors and windows for weak spots.

Government statistics show that 30% of burglaries happen through windows. Installing a few dead-bolts and new window hinges could increase the security of your home exponentially.

6. Keep your curtains, drapes and window blinds closed at night.

Doing this will ensure your valuable items are out of sight. When going out for the evening make use of inexpensive timers to give the illusion of occupancy.

7. Away over Christmas – plan ahead.

If you’re going away at Christmas be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Do not to leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays” etc and again make use of light timers.  Do not advertise your absence on social media. 

8. Secure garages & sheds.

Make sure that garden tools or ladders that could be used to force entry into your home are not left lying around or accessible from an unlocked garden shed. Garages are often targets for burglars looking for tools, bikes and gardening equipment.  Make sure the garage is secure and your possessions are secured too in the case of bikes and tools. Naturally make sure anything portable/valuable is recorded on immobilise.

9. Don’t hide keys & use alarms if you have them.

Burglars know to look for hidden door keys so don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to family or trusted neighbour. Many houses these days have alarms, many though are rarely set.  Make sure yours is on and protecting your home. Check your sensor batteries are not run down on your alarm system and that the SIM card in your alarm is functioning.

10. Mark your property.

Most mobile phones have a unique identifier such as a serial number or an IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) which can found easily by pressing the following keys on your mobile handset: * # 0 6 # . If you receive a mobile phone as a gift and it doesn’t have a unique identifier, there are several affordable marking kits available (i.e. Smart Water / ultra-violet pens).

11. Stay aware.

Keep an eye out for unusual activity in your neighbourhood.  It may be people driving around an area constantly or people walking around looking at properties closely or taking pictures. This may be innocent activity, people looking for property etc. or they may be checking the security of properties. If you see something suspicious report it to the Police.

Hopefully your property won't be targeted by burglars but we hope these tips help you to keep your home safe over the holidays.

ATTEMPTED HANDBAG SNATCH - Lower Tala, 3 December

Sorry to report that there was an attempted handbag snatch in Lower Tala on evening of Sunday 3 December.

Thankfully the lady attacked suffered only a minor injury to her hand, but a visit to the Hospital was needed.  CID responded and two CID motor bikes patrolled the area to try and find the offenders.

There was a small white car involved and the rear registration plate had been removed.

Please be vigilant when you return home at night and be aware of any vehicles or people not normally around or not recognised.  

INTRUDER ALARMS - HAVE A CHECK SYSTEM IN PLACE RE BATTERIES AND SIM CARDS

Information provided by the Police -  it is always useful to check that your intruder alarm is operating correctly.

For those with intruder alarms, the battery life can be up to 5 years, but it is recommended that the batteries are changed every 3 years to ensure that the alarm is effective.

It is also recommended that you mark the date the batteries were installed on the batteries with a black marker so you don't rely on your memory.

Police have also added that it is worth carrying out a monthly check on your SIM card to ensure it is functioning correctly and that renewal has not been overlooked.

If your alarm system sends out alarm activations or alerts via GSM SIM card, please take some time to ensure that your SIM card is working correctly. If it is not, then you will not receive a text message should your premises fall victim to burglars.

In the case of a SIM 'pay as you go', this must be topped up with €10 of credit every year. If it does not get topped up, the card will be disconnected - and the first you will know about it will be when you do not get an alert text message in the event of a breakin.

If you have an annual contract SIM card, as long as you, or your alarm company, pays the SIM card bill annually or monthly, the SIM card will never be disconnected and will always work.

There have been instances recently where it was thought that the alarm had not worked correctly. However, it was found that the problem lay with the SIM card.   Despite being on an annual contract with an alarm company, some SIM cards had been deactivated - most likely because of non-payment of monthly accounts either by the homeowner or the alarm company - the system, therefore, was unable to send text messages to alert the homeowner and/or alarm company.

TO CHECK YOUR SIM CARD IS FUNCTIONING:

Set off the alarm. Let it ring for about 30 seconds to give the SIM card chance to send out the text messages to the numbers stored in the system.  If you do not receive a message, then it is likely that the SIM has been deactivated.

You can also call the alarm SIM card number. It will ring if it is working. If it has been deactivated you will get a Cypriot voice message, followed in English, stating the number is not active.

It is recommended that a regular monthly test is carried out so that you ensure your system operates correctly in the event of a breakin or attempt thereat.

SCOOTER KTN 501

The scooter was in Kamares this morning, with two, possibly Sri Lankan, males onboard.  One wearing a yellow crash helmet, one with a red anorak and the other a grey one.

They were knocking on doors asking for work, but then appeared to be loitering around properties where no-one had answered the door.

The same scooter has been seen around Peyia and has caused concern to residents there also.

SECURITY PATROLS

For information, a Kamares resident was woken in the early hours of this morning when a bright light was shone into his bedroom.  On investigation, the homeowner found a vehicle parked close to his front door on his drive.  He challenged the man with the torch who said 'Security' and left fairly rapidly.   There was no identifying logo on the vehicle nor was any ID offered.

Following investigation by the Police and others, it appears that the vehicle was legitimately doing a security check but had gone to the wrong address.

Please therefore be aware that security companies are using unmarked vehicles for patrols but if you find someone on your property or in your area they should show you ID if challenged.  If you are unsure as to whether any activity is legitimate or have any doubt, always get a note of the registration number and description of the vehicle [make, model and colour] if you can and contact the Police and myself or Val Potter, KVHA Secretary if you are a Kamares resident. 

POSSIBLE RUSE BY POTENTIAL BURGLARS

There have been a couple of reports of incidents recently where either the door bell has been rung, or the knocker knocked, and when the householder has gone to the door, no-one is around.  Incidents have been early evening, but there was one report of this happening at 4am.

If you are not expecting someone, please either look through the peephole in your door [if one is fitted] before you open the door, or have a chain in place so that the door can only be opened to a limited degree. 

It is thought that burglars are possibly using this ruse to see if a homeowner is in residence.   Another ruse is to switch off the electricity at the mains box.  As mentioned previously, you can obtain a lock for your mains cupboard from the Electricity Board who have a universal key so that they can access the cupboard for meter readings.  

PLEASE LOCK TOOLS AND IMPLEMENTS AWAY

There have unfortunately been a couple of incidents in Kamares during the last week.   In both cases aluminium doors or windows were jemmied open [probably with a crowbar, although we have seen spades utilised in the past] and in one the alarm box was smashed to pieces.  As usual, the thieves were after jewellery and cash.

If you have valuables and cash on the premises, please keep these locked away and try not to keep more cash on the premises than you actually need.

If you have tools, please ensure these are locked away when not in use.   Also, if you have ladders, ensure they too are locked in a shed, or, if this is not possible, please secure them with a chain and padlock.

Please be vigilant for any strange vehicles or people around - if in doubt keep a note of descriptions of people and vehicles [including reg no] and time/date they were seen.   If something happens, this information could be useful to the Police.

BREAK IN 9 SEPTEMBER - MELISOVONOS AREA

There was a break in last night at a property in Melisovonos in the area of Kosti Palama.

Cash and jewellery were taken.  If anyone saw anything unusual in this area during the last couple of days could they please contact the Police.

THEFTS FROM PARKED VEHICLES

KVHA and myself have been made aware of several incidents where car windows have been broken to gain access to minor items left in the vehicle - an empty shopping bag in one and €3 in another.   All the thefts have taken place in public carparks during the day. Please ensure that nothing portable and visible is left in your car when it is parked, regardless of location.    Anything moveable should be placed in the boot where it cannot be seen.

CYLINDER OR LOCK SNAPPING - HOW YOU CAN AVOID THIS

You may well have heard of “cylinder snapping” or “lock snapping“ or even the term “lock bumping”.   Lock snapping is a very common method used by burglars to break into property that has a euro cylinder [commonly fitted in Cyprus on most external doors].   

The method of lock snapping involves breaking the cylinder to then manipulate the lock to open. Whilst you may think that all the multi locking points on your door make it secure, it’s important to realise they are all operated by the cylinder – this is the weakest point and if compromised all the locking points are rendered useless.

To avoid the above scenario and to protect yourself against lock snapping there are essentially three ways to go.

OPTION 1

By fitting a Sold Secure Diamond approved cylinder ( SS312 ), your local professional licensed locksmith will help you minimise the likelihood of being burgled using this method of lock snapping.

OPTION 2


If a SS312 Diamond cylinder isn’t used then it should at least reach the 3star Kitemark standard to provide true resistance to snapping.

Don’t simply rely on the manufacturer stating its snap resistance, you should always look for Third Party approval to confirm a product’s performance.

A 1 star kitemark cylinder with 2 star kite mark door furniture ( handle, cylinder guard )

How should the lock cylinder be correctly fitted?

The more of the cylinder that is accessible, the more prone it is to snapping, and a properly fitted cylinder (with no external overhang) will provide more protection against snapping, so size of the cylinder is vital too. Yet more reasons why changing locks isn’t a 'do it yourself' job!

The cylinder should not protrude more than 3mm from the handle and ideally should be completely flush.

ARMED ROBBERY TIMI 7 August

An armed robbery took place this morning at around 8.30am at Timi, when a bank was robbed by two young men, dressed in black, around 1.65m and 1.80m in height.

The suspects were holding a military and a hunting gun.   They left the scene heading in an unknown direction in a Hyundai ix35 light brown car, LAR 046.

If you have any information please call the Paphos Police, on 112 or 1460.   If you spot the two assailants or their vehicle, please do not approach them.

The police have begun a manhunt for two armed robbers after a co-op bank branch in the Paphos-district village of Timi was targeted on Monday morning.

According to the police, two men with their faces concealed entered the bank at around 8.30am. According to witnesses, one of them was carrying a G3 automatic rifle and the other a short-barrelled hunting rifle. One of the men, in broken Greek according to the witnesses, said: “We are here for the money. Don’t be afraid”.

Apart from the bank staff, there was one customer in the branch at the time.

The two, after grabbing an as yet unknown amount of cash from the bank teller’s drawer, drove off in a vehicle the police soon after determined had been stolen from a lot near the airport hours earlier.

A helicopter is being used to help the police in their search for the robbers.
