Mrs. Santa Claus (Apron)
Are you doing a bit of cookie baking? Here is an apron that will put in the Christmas spirit!
I don't usually go for Santa fabric, but this was so cheerful and vintage looking! (found at JoAnn Fabrics) At first I didn't know what to make with the fabric, but when an apron was suggested I knew that was what it needed to be! (Why didn't I think of that at first?)
I melded together two 1940's apron patterns. The skirt portion from one book and the bib from another. This one just needed a bib! Besides, how can you not get messy making cookies?
A little bit of subtle rick-rack to outline the pockets and bib. I tried binding at first it was not so subtle.....
In January I will share the pattern. I wasn't completely happy with the way this one turned out, a few adjustments and it will be good.
I love the way the skirt curves, adds a bit of pizzazz, doesn't it?
While I was making this apron, this is the song that kept running through my head! "Mrs. Santa Claus" sung by Nat King Cole.

Apple Picking - Vintage Style!
![]() |
I found a few vintage apron-wearing women to celebrate Apple Picking time! Hopefully, we will be able to fit a trip to the orchard in this weekend. Apple picking is one of my favorite autumn activity!

I think this one is my favorite, so sweet!

And of course, a bit of baking always follows apples. So many luscious things to make with apples!

Embroidered Aprons
Last week my friend Dru at The Country Farm Home shared two treasures from her collection. Aren't they beautiful? She kindly let me share them with you today. (Thanks Dru!)
Appliqued flowers, no waist seam, bias bound edges, it all says 1930s to me!
I love the embroidery on this one! So pretty! Classic early 30s.
Pink flowers! What could be more perfect? Wouldn't any gal feel springy in one of these gems!
Please visit Dru at The Country Farm Home for more pictures of the aprons and to see her fabulous "Plain and Simple Farmhouse" decorating!

A few 1940s Adverts
Don't you love the lines in vintage ads?! The "Nescomatic way"!
Did you notice the aprons in all three of these ads are the same style? Pinafore style with shoulder ruffles. Must of been the look for that year.
And a different kind of apron, a Man Apron! I love his striped shirt, so old fashioned, even for 1949.

A little Apron Inspiration
GREENAWAY, KATE (1846-1901), English artist and book illustrator, was the daughter of John Greenaway, a well-known draughtsman and engraver on wood, and was born in London on the I7th of March 1846. After a course of study at South Kensington, at Heatherleys life classes, and at the Slade School, Kate Greenaway began, in 1868, to exhibit watercolor drawings at the Dudley Gallery, London. Her more remarkable early work, however, consisted of Christmas cards, which, by reason of their quaint beauty of design and charm enjoyed an extraordinary vogue. Her subjects were, in the main, young girls, children, flowers, and landscape; and the air of artless simplicity, freshness, humor, and purity of these little works so appealed to public and artists alike that the enthusiastic welcome habitually accorded to them is to be attributed to something more than love of novelty. 1940s Blue Summer Dress
In looking through my pictures today, trying to find something to post, I came across this dress. Isn't it so cheerful and summery? Perfect for today!
Now I know you all know I love vintage things, aprons and sewing, but did you know I like to dabble in sewing vintage dresses too? (I am sure you all are saying, yeah, this doesn't surprise me.)
Aren't the details something? For being a casual summer dress it certainly packs the a lot of details! My favorites- the u-shaped neckline with gathers and the pockets that are cut in one with the skirt and gathered with a self fabric tie.
Some of details get lost in the print of the fabric, but that is okay with me, the fabric is just too cute! The sleeves are white because I didn't have quite enough fabric.
The cute little pockets.....
And a better view of the sleeves.

Christmas Apron Inspiration
I thought is was time for a little Christmas inspiration! What better place to go then Etsy? Wish I could add them all to my collection! |
Vintage Christmas Apron |
Don't you love the candy cane? And the bit of understated white on white rick-rack. There is something about these sheer 50s hostess aprons that I love! Maybe is it their obvious un-practicalness. |
Christmas Half Apron Is there anything that says Vintage Christmas like Bells?! Merry Christmas Apron |
I love the printed fabric of this apron. So cheerful and merry! Those are orniments scattered over it. |
Festive Poinsettia Apron |
Isn't this Poinsettia apron festive? (Just like the title says!)
As you can see, the majority of Christmas aprons are half aprons, the preferred style for fancy or hostess aprons in the 50s-60s.
Don't they inspire you pull out your festive apron? Or sew one up? I really need a candy cane one!
