To the uninformed, weblogging seems to be a recent trend that has swept across the computers of the world. In actuality, weblogs, or blogs as they are most typically called, have been around for years, and the technology behind them even longer. Blogging has been evolving slowly, and only within the past few years has its development as a cultural phenomenon really gained momentum. Blogging has evolved over the last decade, and has now become a major cultural movement, gaining respect as a journalistic alternative, as well as a method of self-publishing. Its impact can ruin a career, make someone famous, and if done well, change lives. This paper will examine the movement of weblogging from the first website published on the internet, to the enormous popularity it has as a mainstream media and personal publishing form today.
