Thanks to the ideas of the Revolution, two groups of people demanded equal rights: blacks and women. The blacks loved the idea of natural rights written in the Declaration of Independence, and began to petition for their freedom. The North began to abolish slavery while the South held on to the slaves, their economic motives overcoming the republican ideas. Women also began to demand equal rights, they were denied legal rights, but they did become more assertive in their divorces and economic lives.
