RUBBISH DUMPING IN TALA & KAMARES
As many of you know, Tala Council has only a small number of outside staff to deal with all the cleaning in Tala and Kamares, including the green areas.
What is becoming an increasing problem is the illegal dumping of old furniture and garden waste, bagged and unbagged, in various areas in and around Tala and Kamares. Not only does this create an eyesore, but also creates an unofficial tip which encourages others to leave their rubbish. Further it diverts the already hard-pressed resources away from other duties.
How can you help?
1 If you employ gardeners, please ask what they do with the rubbish they take away – many charge extra for removal so you could be being charged to take it to an official site when it is in fact ending up in a ravine, a green household refuse bin, or an illegal dumping site around the village or in the proximity of the recycling bins. Please stress to your gardener that they must take cuttings to an official site and not just dump it.
2 If you see anyone dumping rubbish of any type in and around Tala and Kamares, please take a note of the vehicle type, colour and registration number and report this to Cathi on toffee@primehome.com. Please also advise her of any neighbour depositing large amounts of garden waste [bagged or unbagged] on the pavements. All reports will be treated in confidence.
3 If you have garden waste or other rubbish to dispose of, these are your options:
A] The Government operated site for garden waste recycling [Green Point] is now open at Akoursos, in an old quarry on the left hand side of the road leading to Akoursos village. However, this site is only open on the following days:
Monday 0800-1800
Wednesday 0800-1800
Friday 0800-1800
Saturday 0900-1500
Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday CLOSED
The site can take garden waste, recyclable materials, appliances, building rubble, batteries, used oil. There is no charge for using the site but all the Councils and Municipalities may be required to contribute a [considerable!] sum for this facility.
There is still a question mark over whether they will accept deliveries from 'businesses' and I understand some commercial vehicles are being turned away on the grounds that they are a business and need a waste permit. Further information follows on this point.
B ]Options for garden waste:
1 Taken by the householder to the free site above at Akoursos
2 Collection of up to 2 bags of garden waste [excluding branches and tree cuttings] by the refuse collectors. Note, however, that priority will be given to household rubbish and garden waste may not always be taken if refuse levels are higher than usual.
3 Purchase blue Tala Council bags at the Council office, and advise the office when you have bags ready for collection. Collections will be done the week of the first Monday of each month [Monday – Kamares; Tuesday – Stephanie/Lofos ; Wednesday – Melisovonos & Monastery ; Thursday – Village and South of Milt. Stylianou]. No charge will be made for collection of these blue bags.
4 Request uplift from the Council office – a charge will be made depending on the volume of waste.
5 Take any bags to the private garden waste centre in Tala – a charge will be made of €1 for the first bag, and €0.50 for each additional bag. The site is open Tuesday 0900-1200, and Saturday 0900-1200 and 1400-1600]
6 Arrange for collection by the private garden waste collectors – the charge will depend on the volume/vehicle required.
Please also bear in mind that the private garden waste collector will pick up domestic appliances free of charge. There is a drop off fee for wooden furniture items, and home pick-up is offered for a supplementary charge.
