Prize Winners in Essay Contest

An essay contest about the impact of tuberculosis (TB) in the African-American community was organized in March of 1947 by the Erie County Health and Tuberculosis Society with the assistance of Erie County Schools. In the front row, left to right: Miss Ellen Curry, Miss Arminta Martin and Miss Mary Alice Evans.

Miss Ellen Curry won second place with her essay titled, The Part Which the TBA [TB Alliance] Plays in the Control of the TB in my Community.

Miss Arminta Martin, the organizer of the contest, is the Negro Health Secretary and TB Society Organizer for Erie County Health.

Miss Mary Alice Evans won first place with her essay titled, What if I told her... (a reassuring letter to a friend who has discovered that she has TB)

In the back row, left to right: Mr. Paul S. Crossman, Mr. Winter and M. E. Kolpien.

Mr. Paul S. Crossman is the Chairman of the Health and Education Committee, Health and TB Society.

Mr. Winter is the Chairman of the Erie County Health and TB Society.

M. E. Kolpien is the Superintendent of Erie County Schools.
