Blue Moon is an ice cream flavor with bright blue coloring. The ice cream has been described as "Smurf-blue, marshmallow-sweet, and tasting remarkably like Froot Loops and Fruity Pebbles."
Erie's Blue Moon Ice Cream was created in 1953 by John and Lola Klemm at their family owned and operated Dari Creem ice cream stand in Erie at 715 Parade Street. The family business was passed down to John Klemm’s son, Bob, and his wife Audrey; then in 1979, to Bob Klemm's stepson, Jay Sadlier, and his wife Sophie, who owned and operated the stand until 2008, when the store was permanently closed due to the owner's health problems.
After a national news story about the flavor, the Blue Moon appellation, but not the Klemm’s recipe, was copied by other ice cream stands in the northeast and upper mid-western part of the United States. Blue Moon Ice Cream, of various recipes, from various sources, is now found throughout the world, sold by a multitude of brands, franchises and manufacturers.
