Six arrests in connection with Marathounda landfill
According to police, six people have been arrested, including the former mayor, in connection with alleged illegalities relating to the operation of Paphos’ landfill site at Marathounda, following a complaint by the town’s mayor, Phedonas Phedonos.
The allegations relate to the period of 2008 to 2015.
A spokesman for HYTA (the landfill site) confirmed to Sunshine Radio that he understood a number of arrests had been made, connected to the previous management of the facility. He said these include the town’s former mayor, disgraced Savvas Vergas, who is currently serving a six year prison term at a protective custody unit in Nicosia, due to death threats from outside the central prison.
An arrest warrant was also issued for the former financial controller of Paphos municipality, who was previously suspended after being implicated for bribery and corruption in another case, where it was alleged that he demanded a €5,000 bribe from a businessman who was renting a cafeteria which is situated at Dasoudi Park in Paphos.
A total of six arrests were made in connection with a raft of offences including, conspiracy to commit felony, corruption, forgery, circulation of fake documents and abuse of power of a public official.
