UN OUTRAGE! NUCLEAR WEAPONS NATIONS BOYCOTT TREATY TALKS

A MURDERER's ROW OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS NATIONS AND THEIR ALLIES IS BOYCOTTING SCHEDULED UN TALKS ON THE ELIMINATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.
                                               
                                                  
                                                

Last October, 120 countries voted to proceed with formal discussions on the proposed Treaty at the UN.
The talks are to decide and vote on "a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons toward the goal of total elimination."

The Obama administration voted "No!"

Now, in a clear indication that the Nuclear Weapons Industry is in charge no matter who sits in the Oval Office, the US throughTrump appointee UN Ambassador Nikki Hayley, is calling for and leading this outrageous, immoral boycott.

                                                     
                                               

Their position is that We, the people, of the US and the world should not even be allowed to discuss this Urgent Life And Death Issue in a global forum.

Ambassador Haley made the moral miscue of chastising those governments that favor the Treaty talks: "...are they looking out for their people?"
 She even dusted off the old canard that such thinking (a Nuclear Weapons Ban) is "unrealistic." Seventy plus years of kicking the Nuclear Armageddon can down the road and this is still their argument.
                                                 
                                                

Still not done, she trotted out the sad joke that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty has become - thanks to non-compliance by the very same signatory Nuclear Armed Nations over the course of decades.Note the "Disarmament" requirement:

POPE FRANCIS sent his message of support for the Treaty talks:
"an ethical and moral exercise in hope."


In opposition sits a small circle of Nuclear Nations foreign ministers and ambassadors who represent an even smaller, unelected and unaccountable circle of officials, who allow only themselves to make these ultimate decisions for all of us.

A few days ago the National Catholic Reporter published an interview with Sister Megan Rice,now 86, who is one of the three Anti-Nuclear Weapons Activists featured in Mr. Zak's book.

She is one of those rare individuals possessing both the moral and physical courage to stand on that lonely legal ledge between her passionate convictions and the laws of the State.


                                               

         


"I think it is important to wake people up. They've gone to sleep for 70 years. People weren't consulted in the building of these horrific weapons. It was all very secret and very contained."

She describes the Oak Ridge Uranium Enrichment Complex as "a crime scene" where our government is committing "crimes against humanity. Crimes against international laws and treaties."



                                                 

"People in various religious faith traditions recognize that it is a crime to possess nuclear weapons."


                                                 

Referring to the history and dire threat posed by the world's Nuclear Weapons Arsenals:

"People need to know. It needs to be taught as historical fact and let people make their own conclusions about it."
But due to lack of education on this issue, we "are unable to recognize the immorality or even the thought of a nuclear bomb."


                                                     

                                                  As this Blog has warned repeatedly - "out of sight and out of mind" is a major obstacle to Nuclear Weapons Abolition. That has to change!

There is real hope here - as noted "NUKES ARE IN THE NEWS" and back on the front burner of American and World consciousness.

Nuclear Weapons are not just in the news but are themselves the news. Steadily and surely becoming a matter of Public Consciousness and Private Conscience.



                                                   

Sister Rice continues that she was pleased with Mr. Zak addressing the problem of nuclear weapons. But she takes issue with the author's describing what they did at Oak Ridge as a "crime."

"He doesn't say that this is our shared responsibility whenever we know our government is involved in criminal activity to expose and oppose all that the government is doing against the common good."

Expose and Oppose. Agreed. Nothing illegal there.

This Blog has described what these three activists did there on site as "bending" the law - not breaking it.

A LEGAL DISTINCTION. But a MORAL DISTINCTION worth preserving.

We can admire and respect their convictions and actions and applaud their willingness to accept punishment under the laws of the State.

But the law has been and can be changed. Often, most effectively by grassroots activism.

At Hiroshima the President laments the "technology" that led to the atomic bombings and that has brought us to the Nuclear Precipice:
"The scientific revolution that led to the splitting of an atom requires moral revolution as well." He mentions a "future that we can choose" and "the start of our own moral awakening."

Sorry, Mr President that is NOT the solution to the problem.We cannot change who we are as human beings. We cannot change our nature nor do we have the time for such a "revolution". Nuclear Weapons Must Go and they must go NOW.

We carry these catastrophic weapons with us like sidearms with unlocked triggers. Warheads on hair trigger alert. They are with us when we sleep, when we awake, when we head out for the day with the belief that our homes, our families and our world will be there when we return. On those two awful August days in 1945 the people of those cities did the same. We know what happened. It will happen again to all of us next time and to all of the unborn generations IF we continue in our cozy complacency.

While we may agree with Martin Luther King that the "moral arc of the universe is long", we must realize that in this case it will not be long enough.We cannot keep kicking the Nuclear Weapons can down that dead end road. Everyday that we do so is a "hold your breath and hope for the best day."
President Obama's words are empty. Devoid as they are of any specific measures to end these holocaust creating Nuclear Weapons in our time. In fact, he is proposing just the opposite - an inane, insane "modernization" program for these killer weapons.

Winston Churchill once spoke of "the long lamentable catalog of human crime." Knowing our history of endless warfare, genocide and Holocaust who can honestly believe that these horrific weapons will never be used. 
That a world leader somewhere, sometime, will not Click on the final DELETE button. Yes, that fast! Everything over and ended with a keyboard click. Whether by design or by accident or miscalculation - will not matter.
