CLINTON'S DOUBTS ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM

At a February fundraiser, Candidate Clinton privately "expressed doubts" about our nation's moving forward with its 30 year trillion dollar creation of a new generation of World Destroying Nuclear Weapons and their computer-driven, highly complex, incredibly expensive delivery to target systems.

She also staked out a position (again, not on the record) against the proposed new Nuclear-Tipped Cruise Missile aka Long Range Stand Off missile, LRSO:

"The last thing we need are sophisticated cruise missiles that are nuclear armed."
                                                  

                                                    

As described in our numerous Posts here, the Times, too, describes a "modernization" program featuring "new factories, refurbished nuclear arms, and a new generation of weapon carriers, including bombers, missiles and submarines."
                                                   


                                                     

                                                     
                                                     

Andrew Weber, former high-ranking Defense official, called the new missile a "particularly destabilizing, dangerous type of nuclear weapon."

Clinton praised former Sec of Defense, William J Perry, for speaking out against the Nuclear Weapons threat, and in particular the LRSO, stating that the more he speaks out publicly "the better off we'll be in really trying to cut this off."


                                                     

She also appeared to question the necessity for the Nuclear Modernization program: "This is going to be a big issue. There's a lot of money we're taking about to go into refurbishing and modernization."

Clinton also mentioned being open to exploring new Nuclear Weapons Treaties with Russia beyond 2010's New Start which she helped negotiate.
                                                  

                                                   

She continued: "Do we have to do any of it? If we have to do some of it,how much do we have to do? That's going to be a tough question...." and said that she would ask for the help of Mr.Weber and Mr. Perry to "help me answer that question."

This Blog's position is stark and steadfast. To answer Sec Clinton's question - WE SHOULD NOT BE DOING ANY OF IT!

Allow these aging, horrific, world-ending weapons to die a world-wide natural death in their Silos, Subs and Bombers. If that's not fast enough, (and it probably won't be) Dismantle Them. Start Now!

This is our NUCLEAR WEAPONS RUBICON. Once we cross this singularly dangerous threshold, there is no going back. That trillion dollars and more will be in the hands of the Nuclear Weapons Industry and its multitude of contractors. Then it will be too late.

NATO NUKES: A CHILLING REMINDER

A chilling reminder, once again, that these Weapons of Ultimate Destruction are central to the strategic thinking of both sides of the East/West Divide (NATO and Russia).

From the NATO meeting in Warsaw, The New York Times reports that Nuclear Weapons are front and center in military discussions.


                                                   

Citing the Alliance's NATO Review Journal that "Nuclear Weapons once again had to move back to the center of the alliance's defense plans" and that Nuclear Weapons drills "should be exercised openly and regularly" and further that these "exercises should not point to any specific nuclear thresholds that might signal to the Russians what it would take to provoke a nuclear response."

But some in the alliance are rightfully concerned about the contemplated use of these Weapons.

German Foreign Minister Steinmeir "criticized a major military exercise in Poland last month as saber-rattling for provoking the Russians." 

A dispute has arisen over whether "to tone down any potential provocations" regarding Nuclear Weapons.

A specific point of contention within NATO has been "whether to rid Europe of the B-61." NATO and U.S. Nukes are presently stored in several European nations, including Belgium. NATO member Turkey is also a storage site for B-61 Nuclear Bombs.


                                                 

On their side, Mr. Putin and his military leadership have referred to the Russian ability to reduce America to "nuclear ash" and that they will respond in kind to any NATO Nuclear threats or posturing.


                                                    

The leaders on both sides need to ratchet down the rhetoric when it comes to Nuclear Weaponry and the very real threat of Nuclear War. WORDS DO HAVE CONSEQUENCES.

The late Jonathan Schell warned that a Nuclear War will start in minutes and be over in an afternoon.

NO FIRST USE NOW! NO LAUNCH ON WARNING! GLOBAL ZERO PETITION

POLITICO reports, June 22, 2016, that President Obama is considering a Nuclear Weapons "NO FIRST USE" Policy decision before he leaves office. This would mean that the U.S. would NOT be the first nation to launch Nuclear Weapons in a future crisis.

He may also consider ending our "LAUNCH ON WARNING" policy. This would end the razor's edge "hair-trigger alert" Nuclear Weapons system currently in place. It would help to prevent Nuclear War launched by accident, miscalculation, misunderstanding or mistake.

CLICKING DELETE: NUCLEAR WEAPONS AND THE END OF OUR WORLD

At Hiroshima the President laments the "technology" that led to the atomic bombings and that has brought us to the Nuclear Precipice:
"The scientific revolution that led to the splitting of an atom requires moral revolution as well." He mentions a "future that we can choose" and "the start of our own moral awakening."

Sorry, Mr President that is NOT the solution to the problem.We cannot change who we are as human beings. We cannot change our nature nor do we have the time for such a "revolution". Nuclear Weapons Must Go and they must go NOW.

We carry these catastrophic weapons with us like sidearms with unlocked triggers. Warheads on hair trigger alert. They are with us when we sleep, when we awake, when we head out for the day with the belief that our homes, our families and our world will be there when we return. On those two awful August days in 1945 the people of those cities did the same. We know what happened. It will happen again to all of us next time and to all of the unborn generations IF we continue in our cozy complacency.

While we may agree with Martin Luther King that the "moral arc of the universe is long", we must realize that in this case it will not be long enough.We cannot keep kicking the Nuclear Weapons can down that dead end road. Everyday that we do so is a "hold your breath and hope for the best day."
President Obama's words are empty. Devoid as they are of any specific measures to end these holocaust creating Nuclear Weapons in our time. In fact, he is proposing just the opposite - an inane, insane "modernization" program for these killer weapons.

Winston Churchill once spoke of "the long lamentable catalog of human crime." Knowing our history of endless warfare, genocide and Holocaust who can honestly believe that these horrific weapons will never be used.
